Ryan McSweeney is in his first year with the Grizzlies, and his first in professional baseball — he joined Gateway through the 2018 Frontier League Draft. After trading the No. 1 overall pick to the Traverse City Beach Bums, the Grizzlies chose McSweeney with the No. 3 selection in the first round.
McSweeney pitched at Welsh University, where he was named a 2017 NCAA Division II All-American after finishing the season 4-1 with a 0.91 ERA. McSweeney struck out 31 batters — and walked only six — in 29 2/3 innings pitched. He also notched nine saves. McSweeney is from Seven Hills, Ohio, where he was a three-sport athlete in high school.
"Obviously he has great collegiate numbers," Grizzlies pitching coach Richard Barrett said. "His fastball has good run and he showed a plus slider. We'll explore the possibility of using him in long relief as he competes for a spot in the bullpen."
