O'FALLON, Mo. — Gateway Grizzlies first baseman Trae Santos hit 32 total home runs Tuesday night to win the 2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby at CarShield Field.
Santos outslugged all participants over the first, second and third rounds — which narrowed down the eight Frontier League players to one representative — then beat former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and outfielder Rick Ankiel in the final.
Santos, a former San Diego Padres minor leaguer who reached Double-A San Antonio in 2016, ranks fourth in the Frontier League with 11 home runs this season. He was the only Grizzlie to appear in each of Gateway's 53 games prior to the All-Star Break.
The Barrigada, Guam, native was one of four Grizzlies selected to represent the organization Wednesday night in the Frontier League All-Star Game at CarShield Field. Starting pitcher Alec Kisena will join Santos on the Experienced team, while starting pitcher Max MacNabb and shortstop Artemis Kadkhodaian will oppose them on the Rookies team. Kadkhodaian was voted as the only Grizzlie to start the game.
